What’s On | Britglyph goes LIVE
Britglyph is the UK’s first networked Geoglyph.
Britglyph is a public art project for the 21st century. Britglyph aims to inspire the Great British Public to get involved and collaborate in the creation of an awesome new monument. A monument for the nation, made by the nation. A gigantic Geoglyph, powered by the network!
Bought to my attention by one of the projects producers on twitter this week, Britglyph has people, place and moments at its heart. The brilliant (and arguably risky) bit, is that to truly work, Britglyph must inspire interest and action amongst the General British Public. We need to get involved, collaborate and make our mark on the landscape to make this thing happen. To succeed will mean the creation of a shared monument called Britglyph. This monument will exist online, offline, forever and in the moment. It will remain for all to see in years to come.
So what’s the story?
Since prehistoric times, humans have used different technologies to make their mark and leave traces of themselves for others to find later. We create objects and markings designed to last the ages and build monuments to be seen from the vantage of the stars. From the crop circles and megaliths of the English countryside to the hunters and warriors of cave paintings and the ‘I woz ere’ of the suburban subway, we are compelled to make our momentary presence visible for longer. To say ‘I was here, I lived!’
A truly public art project, Britglyph harnesses our compulsive desire to ‘leave a trace,’ and injects design and co-operation to create something bigger and better! By contributing a unique personal action in different places across Britain, Britglyph will bring people together to create a national networked Geoglyph. A monument for Britain made possible by individuals leaving their mark in space via their mobile camera phone. Today’s ubiquitous technology.
Get involved
To take part in Britglyph and play a part in this national extravaganza! you will need to do the following (at some point soon):
1. Register your interest in Britglyph (it’s a short form I promise)
2. When alerted, travel to a local pre-determined location set by Britglyph (there will be many across the country)
3. Take a photo of yourself with an object, and send it to Britglyph via email, MMS or the mobile application ShoZu
Britglyph launches on December 1st 2008. Britglyph was conceived by Moblog and Shozu.
